Karate

Karate derives from a fusion of Chinese Kempo and the indigenous Japanese Ryukyuan martial arts. When translated from Japanese Karate (do) means “(the way of) empty hand”. Strongly focused on utilizing external force Karate primarily consists of hard punches, kicks, elbow, knee, and open handed strikes.

For techniques in Karate there is a large emphasis on physical strength, striking power, linear footwork and low or wide stances. Like most traditional martial arts there are many sub styles such as Shokotan, Kyokushin, Seido and Ishin Ryu and usually all of these employ the basic fundamentals.

Each style of Karate will have its own unique Katas which are sets of movements a Karate practitioner (Karate-ka) will learn from their Sensei or senior students. The Kata will teach them techniques they can apply to sparring and self defence.

Karate is practiced globally for sport, fitness and self defence and has become a very popular martial art to study.
