Aikido is a relatively new Japanese martial art created by Morihei Ueshiba, a man who fused his philosophy, Shinto religious beliefs and martial training to form the martial art.

Translated from Japanese Aikido means “the way of harmonious spirit”, there is a strong presence of internal ki (chi) training in Aikido and the main focus is to not fight force with force, but instead - redirect the opponents force and use it against them.

The main techniques in Aikido are joint locks and throws, a practitioner will also do a lot of mind training, using relaxation to cultivate ki creating a stronger posture that better utilizes your centre of gravity. Additionally, like most martial arts Aikido will be of assistance to your physical fitness.

Aikido is a well rounded combination of mental and physical training; it is spiritual, effective and practical martial arts style that suits a wide variety or people.

During the 16th century African slaves were brought to Brazil by the Portuguese. The Africans brought with them their own martial art which was banned so they disguised it as a dance which became Capoeira.

In Capoeira, practitioners form a roda (circle) where two people have a game (sparring), the people in the roda play instruments and sing which creates a rythym the sparring people can flow into. There are a lot of fancy kicking techniques, groundwork as well as sweeps and head strikes that make Capoeira a fun martial art to watch and learn.

Sparring is practiced without hitting each other; this gives a defender the chance to evade an attack and also means that training can be injury free. Capoiera is great for fitness and has a very unique fusion of music, dance and martial arts.

Zui Quan translated from Cantonese or Mandarin means 'Drunken Fist', which is most commonly known to the western world as Drunken Boxing.

Drunken Boxing is essentially a style of Kung Fu that mimics the way a drunkard moves, unpredictably yet relaxed. The techniques were based on a legend 'The Eight Drunken Immortals' and each set of movements is demonstrating techniques from each of the Immortals, allthough the actual origin of Drunken Boxing is mostly myth and legend.

The style itself is very unsual and difficult to learn. Todays non-traditional Drunken Boxing has become very flashy and acrobatic but it is a beautiful style to see in action. An excellent example of this style is the movie 'The Drunken Master' starring Jackie Chan.

Alot of Chinese martial arts are based on the movements of animals, and so she decided to learn techniques based on how the Crane moved - adding them to her already vast Kung Fu knowledge.

The art of White Crane Kung Fu's techniques are mostly centered around intricate hand movements which are usually used for close combat.

It is a blend of ki (mind force) and external (physical) techniques, with the physical moves being structured around circular movements to use the opponents force against them.

Hapkido is a very well rounded martial art and its practitioners learn to defend themselves against untrained attacks or attacks from other martial arts styles. The principal philosophy in Jeet Kune Do, is that you should be yourself and express yourself through martial arts, due to this originally Jeet Kune Do did not include forms and belts, and it is practiced to your own ability, using the techniques that best fit your own style.

Bruce Lee also developed Jeet Kune Do with the principal of striking first, using your longest weapon verses your opponents shortest, if an attacker comes in with a punch your first technique would be to kick them, to affect their balance - move in the disable them. Roughly translated Kung Fu means “Skill attained through hard work” and this is the basis of all styles of Kung Fu.

Around four hundred styles of traditional Kung Fu were developed in China from as far back as 2698 B.C. These martial art styles have been emigrated throughout the world and today it can be difficult to find authentic Kung Fu styles. Kung Fu can become diluted as the styles are taught to different cultures with different ways of thinking and some Sifus (Kung Fu Instructors) try to re-invent the wheel by adding some different techniques.

There are two main subsets of Chinese Kung Fu, Internal (Neijia) and External (Waijia). Northern Kung Fu styles are generally more external and emphasize on long stances and large flashy kicks as opposed to the internal Southern Kung Fu styles which emphasize more on hand techniques and closed stances used for stabilizing the body such as Wing Chun.

Many of the styles include weapons and some even mimic the way animals fight. Tiger Claw, White Crane and Eagle Claw are a few examples of animal styles of Kungfu.

Martial Arts Tricking is a mix of kicks, flips and twists mainly for display purposes. It includes moves from Tae Kwon Do, Capoeira, Wushu, gymnastics and also breakdancing.

Martial arts tricking has spread from martial artists training for musical forms to people with different backgrounds and conditioning just wanting to learn some cool tricks. Because of this it is usually self taught and trainings tend to be very casual with each person working on their own thing.

Tricksters however will often get together and help push each other to learn new moves. Once a basic set of tricks is learnt, one can start to combine these moves and eventually perform some visually amazing trick combos.

The origins of Mauy Thai trace back to its predecessor Muay Boran, translated it means "Ancient Boxing” and was created by Siamese soldiers in combination with a weapons system. Muay Boran was eventually broken down into several styles, one of which became the martial art - Muay Thai.

The art of the eight limbs symbolizes a Muay Thai practitioner’s ability to strike with the knees, fists, elbows and feet. The Muay thai fighters step into the ring in trunks and gloves like western kick-boxers do.

Parkour (French for "art of moving") - also referred to as freerunning was developed in France by David Belle that is essentially Martial arts tricking combined with moving from one location to another in the fastest and most effective means possible, getting across urban terrain using the human body to its maximum potential.

Freerunning or Parkour, requires a fair bit of physcial training, essentially, it involves scaling buildings, jumping across rooftops, doing cool martial arts tricks like, front, back and wall flips, the moves we all see in the movies and wish we could perform ourselves, the good news is, in many places around the world, you're able to learn Parkour now.

Parkour is starting to make an appearance in movies in recent years, such as the large chase scene in Casino Royale proving just how popular it is.

Silat roughly translates to "fight" and is a term used to describe an aggregation of the hundreds of various Malay Archipelago (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and several thousand islands) martial arts in a similar style to how Kung Fu is the general term for all Chinese martial arts. It is now more commonly referred to as Pencak roughly translating to "the techniques trained" or Pentjak Silat internationally.

On the surface Pencak Silat looks very much like Aikido, with a lot of throwing and grappling techniques being used however the Silat practitioner is using their entire body as a weapon with strikes intended to manipulate the opponent when they attack and soften them up for a throw or joint lock.

While Pencak Silat may not be suited to everyone it is considered a powerful and great martial art to study.

Sui Nim Tao, roughly translating from Cantonese to mean (small idea path) is the first form in Wing Chun Kung Fu and is the basis for every move. There are 108 movements practiced in the same stationery stance - which is not common in almost any martial arts. There are no kicks in Sui Nim Tao, only hand techniques practiced slowly, with intense focus and thinking developing the moves.

The knees are bent slightly with the toes pointing in slightly, creating a triangular shape with the body to point directly to your center in front of you, or the center of your opponent, all Sui Nim Tao hand techniques move along this centre line, which is a fundamental part of Wing Chun. Practitioners often use mirrors to aide guiding their hands long the centre line. The aim is to create a heavily grounded stance so that you can use your entire body mass to project force forward, a strong stance is near impossible to push or pull, a strong stance means the practitioner will simply move with the force.

The main learning in Sui Nim Tao is understanding how to use focus to develop 'mind force', by thinking a certain way a practitioner develops an arm, controlled by the way their thinking about moving it (abstractly and internally), which can move forwards even when someone is trying to push or pull it in all directions. This of course means that you'll likely come out on top when you punch an untrained person at the same time. However Wing Chuns 'sticking hands' or Chi Sao teaches the body how to react when an opposing force comes in, in case there is too much force to simply punch through.

The Sui Nim Tao form is practiced commonly, more often than the other forms in Wing Chun (Chum Kiu and Bui Jee) because if you have not acquired a strong Sui Nim Tao then all the kicking and pivoting movements and even the hand techniques, will have little effect, good Sui Nim Tao means very powerful techniques across the board.

All of the movements in Sui Nim Tao are, or become, every technique in Wing Chun. It take a lot of practice to develop a strong Sui Nim Tao, but once gained, it is the beginning of some truly powerful Kung Fu.

Modern Taekwondo has been developed throughout its time from a combination of Korean, Okinawan, Japanese and Chinese martial arts and was established as its own style during the 1940’s.

Tae Kwon do is Korea’s national sport and is also an Olympic event. Renowned as a kicking art Taekwon Do adopts the philosophy that the leg is the longest weapon the body has and it is designed to deliver skillfully executed, powerful kicks that aim to avoid the offender’s retaliation.

As is the way with many martial arts, Tae kwon do practitioners learn to develop strength, speed, stamina, self defence and self control. It is particularly good for people who want to get fitter or people who are interested in competing in tournaments.

Tai Chi (Taiji) is a Chinese martial art that was founded centuries ago, most notably by the legendary Chang San Feng (1391 – 1459). Tai Chi is the epitome of internal martial arts, it is highly focused on the idea that there is an energy or chi flowing throughout the body, with the conception this energy can be manifested through slow controlled movements, breathing and posture, which can be described as meditation in motion.

Over the years Taichi was split into four main styles, Yang, Chen, Sun and Wu. Each style has the underlying principles of Tai Chi and its own unique characteristics within the forms, for instance, the only style that teaches attacking is Chen style.

Translated Tai Chi means “supreme ultimate fist” and this is quite appropriate, while it takes a lot of dedication and years of practice it can become an incredibly powerful style of martial art.
Self defensive proficiency is a long term goal with Tai Chi so it may not suit everyone, but it is a great martial art for people of any age, body type and fitness ability.

Wing Chun Kung Fu is one of the newest recorded martial arts, developed around 300 years ago by the Shoalin Abbess Ng Mui and is one of the only martial arts developed by a woman. Wing Chun or Wing Tsun was created from the best of Dragon, Crane style and other forms of Kung Fu in combination with its own moves to be used as purely practical self defense.

There are no flashy moves like head high kicks in Wing Chun, all of the moves abide by the philosophy that you need to strike first using the shortest distance and the center line, every block is also an attack or can turn into a counter attack. Wing Chun was developed not to require brute strength so in this way a skilled Wing Chun practitioner can defend themselves against a much larger, physically stronger attacker.

Wing Chun is not competitively practised generally as it is made for close combat, in fighting (sometimes referred to as the science of in fighting). When you learn Wing Chun you may be suprised as to how the techniques are practised, there are only 3 hand forms, Sui Nim Tao (small idea) is the foundation for the forms and all its movements require you to stand in one place, with great relaxation and focus develop force using your mind (chi) while going through the main hand techniques. All of the kicks and hand techniques can easily flow into other moves which are incredibly effective.

Wing Chun does have a decent level of fitness element to it once you start Chi Sao (sticky hands) which is Wing Chun's form of sparring plus kicking and using hand techniques. Wing Chun is able to be practised purely relaxed or externally and is a great spiritual journey.
